The essential oil Bergamot of Reggio Calabria joined the official list of typical Italian products with the certification PDO (protected designation of origin) that was released March 16, 2001.
Being a product PDO certification requires that the entire production process must be carried out in the region of Calabria.

This essential oil is mainly used in the fragrance industry to secure the aromatic bouquet of aromas and to harmonize other essences contained, while the pharmaceutical industry is used for its antiseptic and antibacterial.
The fruit of the bergamot is spherical, with an average weight of 100 grams. It has a yellow color to the maturing, on average peel thin, smooth, sometimes rough and moderately adherent and the pulp is quite substantial, pale yellow-green in color with a taste strongly sour and bitter.
