Montepulciano d’Abruzzo joined the official list of typical Italian products with the certification DOC (denomination of controlled origin) that was released July 15, 1968.
Being a DOC certification requires that the entire production process must be carried out in the region of Abruzzo.
The DOC Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is reserved for red wines also in the Riserva; There are also sub-areas Casauria or Terre di Casauria, Terre dei Vestini, High Tirino, Terre Peligni and Teate.
The production area of ​​the grapes used to produce wine Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC includes vineyards in the provinces of Chieti, L’Aquila, Pescara and Teramo.
The types allowed are:
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC Riserva
– Color: intense ruby ​​red with slight purple hues tending to garnet with aging;
– Smell: aromas of red fruits, spices, intense, ethereal;
– Taste: full, dry, harmonious, tannic;
– Minimum alcohol content: 12,00% vol where boasts the Riserva minimum 12.50%.
The wine Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC, possibly subjected to the passage or storage in wooden containers, can reveal hints of wood.
Grapes:
– Montepulciano at least 85%;
– Can compete grapes of other red grapes not aromatic, suitable for cultivation in the region Abruzzo, alone or together, up to a maximum of 15%.
Serving temperature: around 18 ° C – 20 ° C.
Serving suggestions: if young is ideal with white meat and pork, when aged with red meats, excellent with cheeses of different ages.
