The Lemon of Sorrento becomes part of the official list of typical Italian products with the certification PGI (protected geographical indication) that was released on November 7, 2000.
Being a product of PGI certification requires that at least one phase of the production process should be carried out in the region of Campania.
Botanically the Lemon of Sorrento PGI is a local ecotype of the species Citrus Limon (Lemon common) known as Lemon of Massa or “Massese (Cultivar Massese)” or as the Oval of Sorrento.
Citrus elliptical and of medium-large sized (weight of not less than 85 grams), has a peel of average thickness and citrine yellow color (for an area greater than 50%) rich in essential oils that make it very fragrant.
The flesh is pale yellow and very juicy juice characterized by a high acidity is rich in vitamin C and minerals.
The Lemon of Sorrento PGI is a product that is qualitatively different from similar products due to the peculiar characteristics of their shelf life and flavor of the local variety. The latter raised with the unique cultivation techniques have used in the Sorrento Peninsula, which allow you to enhance the quality specifications.
