The Sicilian Blood Orange becomes part of the official list of typical Italian products with the certification PGI (protected geographical indication) that was issued on 21 June 1996.
Being a product of PGI certification requires that at least one phase of the production process should be carried out in the region of Sicily.
The PGI, recognizes three varieties of oranges.
Orange Tarot PGI
This orange is thought arises from a mutation of the common Sanguinello. The maturation in soils on hillsides and best exposed begins in mid-December and ends in the areas later, in mid-May. The fruits are large caliber with spherical tending all’ovoidale. This variety is also characterized by the so-called collar or “face”, more or less prominent. The skin color is orange-yellow, flushed on half the area. The flesh, seedless, yellow orange, with reddish pigmentation more or less intense depending on the time of collection, medium juicy and excellent flavor.
Moro orange PGI
A native of the area of ​​Lentini and now widespread in the areas of Catania and Syracuse, this cultivar is the first to mature between blood oranges: you can enjoy it from early December to mid-March. E ‘of medium caliber shape between the spherical and ovoid; the peel is orange with red shades vinous; pulp, without seeds, is entirely dark red, especially advanced maturity. The color of the juice is blood for the presence of anthocyanins (natural pigments) in the flesh and peel. The juice yield is high and very pleasant flavor and slightly sour.
Orange Sanguinello PGI
The variety Sanguinello has been present for a long time in the areas arancicole the provinces of Catania and Syracuse. Together with Sanguinello Muscat, is the most important Italian cultivars of mid season: in fact the maturation begins in February, but the bulk of the harvest takes place between March and April. The fruits are of average size with oblong or spherical; the skin is deep orange color with red tinge. The flesh, seedless or nearly so, is orange with numerous blood streaks, very juicy and excellent flavor.
