The Lentil of Castelluccio joined the official list of typical Italian products with the certification PGI (protected geographical indication) that was released June 13, 1997.
Being a product of PGI certification requires that at least one phase of the production process should be carried out in the regions of Umbria and Marche.
The history of this precious legume is ancient. You always nurtured on karst plains of Castelluccio, within the National Park of the Sibillini Mountains, at an elevation of about 1,500 meters.
The quantity produced on average per year is limited. This makes it a niche product.
Thanks to the climatic conditions rather rigid when born, the Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia PGI is the only legume that does not need to be treated for preservation because it is not attacked by the weevil, insect whose larvae feed on legumes.
The Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia PGI possesses remarkable nutritional qualities: all its proteins, vitamins, fiber and minerals make it excellent for those who need a diet rich in iron, potassium and phosphorus, low in fat and very nutritious. Another important feature of the Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia PGI is the thin skin and tender that allows direct cooking without soaking, greatly reducing preparation time.
