The Melon Mantovano joined the official list of typical Italian products with the certification PGI (protected geographical indication) that was released on November 8, 2013.
Being a product of PGI certification requires that at least one phase of the production process should be carried out in the regions of Lombardy and Emilia Romagna.
The production area of ​​the Melon Mantovano PGI covers approximately 89,000 hectares between the provinces of Mantova and Cremona.
Always the melon is present in Mantova as fruit prince. Alongside other typical products, characterizes the summers of this land with its flavor and hence helps to spread “the taste of Mantova” throughout Italy, a taste that is the result of an extraordinary meeting between history and geography.
The Melon Mantovano PGI has an average weight of 1-1.5 kg, sweet flavor and intense fragrance; peel straw yellow color can be dragnet (streaked green) or smooth. The flesh is orange more or less intense. Particularly suitable in appetizers and desserts. Is rich in vitamin C and has a high sugar content.
The type Smooth has a round shape, the skin is pale cream color and the flesh is orange in color.
The type Retata has an oval or round, the skin is cream-colored or pale green with or without ribbing and the flesh is orange salmon.
