The essential oil Bergamot of Reggio Calabria joined the official list of typical Italian products with the certification PDO (protected designation of origin) that was released March 16, 2001.
Being a product PDO certification requires that the entire production process must be carried out in the region of Calabria.
The essential oil Bergamot of Reggio Calabria PDO is produced along the coast reggina that goes from Villa San Giovanni and Gioiosa Ionica, in the province of Reggio Calabria.
Cultivated for centuries, bergamot is a resource that has characterized most of the coastal landscape Reggio. From late March through April crops bergamot saturate the air with the fragrance of their flowers.
The essential oil Bergamot of Reggio Calabria PDO, is an essential oil obtained by cold pressing of the skins of the fruits of bergamot. This essential oil is mainly used in the fragrance industry to secure the aromatic bouquet of aromas and to harmonize other essences contained, while the pharmaceutical industry is used for its antiseptic and antibacterial.
The fruit of the bergamot is spherical, with an average weight of 100 grams. It has a yellow color to the maturing, on average peel thin, smooth, sometimes rough and moderately adherent and the pulp is quite substantial, pale yellow-green in color with a taste strongly sour and bitter.
E ‘marketed in drums or containers of glass on which must appear the words Bergamot of Reggio Calabria – Essential oil.
In the kitchen are used the whole fruit, in spirit, and essence as a flavoring for the preparation of sweets, liqueurs bergamot and drinks.
