The Clementine Calabria become part of the official list of typical Italian products with the certification PGI (protected geographical indication) that was released on November 25, 1997.
Being a product of PGI certification requires that at least one phase of the production process should be carried out in the region of Calabria.
Cross between bitter orange and mandarin, the Clementine perhaps come from Algeria (according to one of the most credible hypothesis, their name would attract to Father Clément Rodier of Misserghin, in whose garden were found).
Grown in Italy since the ’30s, they found one of their ideal habitat in Calabria. The areas of greatest production are concentrated in lowland areas existing in the region and they are: the Plain of Sybaris and Corigliano in Cosenza, in the Plain of Lamezia Catanzaro, Piana di Gioia Tauro-Rosarno and Locri in Reggio. In just 58 Calabrian towns is concentrated almost half of the surface agrumetata regional, divided as follows: Province of Reggio Calabria 20 municipalities; Province of Catanzaro 14 municipalities; Province of Cosenza 16 municipalities; Province of Vibo 5 municipalities; Province of Crotone 3 municipalities.

Clementines have a spheroidal shape, slightly flattened at the poles, with a minimum size of 16-18 mm. The skin, smooth and dark orange color, contains a juicy and aromatic.
The Clementine Calabria PGI are refreshing and diuretic and have a high sugar content. For the high content of vitamin C, just a couple of fruits a day to cover the daily requirements of an adult.
The fruit is also used in cosmetics in the preparation of toning lotions and masks for the skin.
