The Cherry of Marostica joined the official list of typical Italian products with the certification PGI (protected geographical indication) that was issued on 9 February 2002.
Being a product of PGI certification requires that at least one phase of the production process should be carried out in the Veneto region.
The production area of ​​Marostica cherries PGI includes the territories of several municipalities in the province of Vicenza.
The Cherry of Marostica PGI is a round fruit, red, with a very firm flesh.
It was the first cherry in Italy to be awarded the Seal of Recognition European PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), which identifies the unique characteristics of a product whose production occurs only in a specific geographic area.
The Cherry of Marostica PGI must be sold packaged in containers weighing up to 10 pounds, recognizable by the correct wording and a logo depicting a cherry red with green peduncle superimposed on a medieval tower which is the piece of a chess board. The minimum size (diameter) of Cherry of Marostica PGI shall be 23 mm.
