The Orange Gargano joined the official list of typical Italian products with the certification PGI (protected geographical indication) that was released on 31 August 2007.
Being a product of PGI certification requires that at least one phase of the production process should be carried out in the region of Puglia.
The Protected Geographical Indication Orange Gargano is reserved for two cultivars traditionally grown in the area.
Orange Duretta Gargano PGI
The Orange Duretta Gargano PGI, may have round or oval. His skin has a light orange color and a very smooth surface and fine papillae. It is an ancient variety, of unknown origin, but exclusive of citrus Gargano. His name is linked to the pulp, particularly hard and crunchy and almost no seeds. Mature at Christmas and its production is limited always sought quality that makes these fruits.
The implant is made of the orange on land with a slope accommodation “terrace” using dry-stone walls. Often it is the sister lemon, leaving the latter to the highest parts of the valleys, while the orange is grown in the valleys to the highest resistance to cold.
Blonde Orange City Gargano PGI
The Orange Blonde Municipality Gargano PGI, has a spherical or pear-shaped peel more or less thin, leathery but with very fine grain and color-intense golden yellow. The minimum diameter of 60 mm and the albedo of soft consistency and medium grip. The pulp and juice are yellow-orange with a sugar content of not less than 9%, and an acidity of less than 1.2%.
