The extra virgin olive oil Riviera joined the official list of typical Italian products with the certification PDO (protected designation of origin) which was issued on 24 January 1997.
Being a product PDO certification requires that the entire production process must be carried out in the region of Liguria.
The PDO Riviera Ligure must be accompanied by one of the following additional geographical “Riviera of Flowers”, “Riviera del Ponente Savona” and “Riviera di Levante”.
The protected designation of origin Ligurian Riviera, accompanied by the additional geographical indication “Riviera”, is reserved for extra virgin olive oil obtained from the olive varieties Taggiasca olive groves at least 90%. They can also other varieties present in the groves in no more than 10%.
The protected designation of origin Ligurian Riviera, accompanied by the additional geographical indication “Riviera del Ponente Savona,” is reserved for extra virgin olive oil obtained from the olive varieties Taggiasca olive groves at least 50%. They can also other varieties present in the groves in no more than 50%.
The protected designation of origin Ligurian Riviera, accompanied by the additional geographical indication “Riviera di Levante”, is reserved for extra virgin olive oil obtained from the following varieties of olive trees, alone or together, in the groves: Lavagnina, Razzola, Pignola and local cultivars native to at least 65%. They can also other varieties present in the groves in no more than 35%.
Olives for the production of extra virgin olive oil Riviera Ligure PDO, must be produced in the territory of the provinces of Imperia, Savona, Genoa and La Spezia.
When released for consumption the extra virgin olive oil with denomination of protected origin Ligurian Riviera, accompanied by the geographical “Riviera of Flowers”, must have the following characteristics:
– Yellow to yellow-green;
– Odor: fruity;
– Flavor: sweet with notes of bitter and spicy;
– Maximum total acidity not exceeding 0.5 grams per 100 grams of oil.
When released for consumption the extra virgin olive oil with denomination of protected origin Ligurian Riviera, accompanied by the geographical “Riviera del Ponente Savona,” must have the following characteristics:
– From yellow-green to yellow;
– Odor: fruity;
– Flavor: sweet with notes of bitter and spicy;
– Maximum total acidity not exceeding 0.5 grams per 100 grams of oil.
When released for consumption the extra virgin olive oil with denomination of protected origin Ligurian Riviera, accompanied by the geographical “Riviera di Levante”, must have the following characteristics:
– Yellow to yellow-green;
– Odor: fruity;
– Flavor: sweet with notes of bitter and spicy;
– Maximum total acidity not exceeding 0.8 grams per 100 grams of oil.
The extra virgin olive oil Riviera Ligure PDO is great raw on pasta, fish and vegetables.
