The Prickly Pear St. Cono joined the official list of typical Italian products with the certification PDO (protected designation of origin) that was released March 15, 2013.
Being a product PDO certification requires that the entire production process must be carried out in the region of Sicily.
The PDO Prickly San Cono is distinguished in three varieties that are distinguished by the color of the pulp and flavor and texture:
– The Blood (red pulp)
– The Muscaredda (white flesh)
– The Sulfarina (yellow flesh)
It also allowed a percentage not exceeding 5% of local ecotypes selections ‘Trunzara’.
Among the distinctive features of the Prickly Pear St. Cono PDO remember the large size of the fruit, the peel from the intense and deep colors, a very delicate scent and taste very sweet.
The sweetness and size of the fruit, compared to other production areas of Sicily, appear to be distinctive because of the important parameters related to the peculiarity of the geographical area.
The production area of ​​Prickly Pear St. Cono PDO includes the territory located at an altitude of between 200 and 600 meters above sea level, in the municipalities of San Cono (CT), San Michele di Ganzaria (CT), Piazza Armerina (EN) and Mazzarino (CL).
